Arrabalde segue dois amigos que não conseguem encontrar o caminho na cidade e se recusam a deixar de ser crianças. É um filme, que poderia ser um poema, que não tem género e serve de ponte entre as narrativas, formas e sonhos dos personagens com quem se vão cruzando.
Arrabalde follows two friends who can’t find their way in the city and refuse to stop being children. It is a film, which could be a poem, that has no genre and serves as a bridge between the narratives, forms, and dreams of the characters with whom they cross paths.

Um estrangeiro chega a uma nova cidade. Não fala a língua dos locais nem se parece com eles: em vez de dois, tem vários braços, como um polvo. Ele parece aproximar-se dos outros e chega a oferecer-lhes os seus braços. Sempre que quiser, o estrangeiro pode arrancar um braço que este volta a crescer. Com o tempo, o homem-polvo passa a fazer parte da cidade, até ao dia em que aprende a nova língua.
A foreigner comes to a new city. He doesn’t speak the language of the locals or look like them: instead of two, he has several arms, like an octopus. He seems to approach others and even offers them his arms. Whenever he wants, the foreigner can rip off one of his arms, and it grows back. Over time, the octopus man becomes part of the city, until the day he learns the new language.

Vendo isto como uma imagem perfeita da morte de uma certa Lisboa no rescaldo da crise financeira e do crescimento imobiliário e turístico exponencial que se lhe seguiu, o realizador filma um diário urbano que retrata o quotidiano do estaleiro de obras e os que aí trabalham. O que começa por ser um filme centrado no trabalho acaba por ser a história da relação do realizador com a sua terra natal e com as pessoas que a construíram.
In the heart of Bairro Alto, right in the centre of Lisbon, the building of an old printing workshop is demolished to make way for luxury apartments. Seeing this as a perfect image for the death of a certain Lisbon in the wake of the financial crisis and the ensuing real estate and touristic boom, the director films an urban diary portraying the daily life of the construction site and those who work there. What starts out as a work-centred film turns out to be the story of the director’s relationship with his hometown and with the people who build it.

Little by little, António and Pedro become closer, while Lena and Jorge grow apart. But the tragic pact that unites Pedro, Maria and Paulo makes them unafraid to fall to their deaths, leaving the family in a desperate trail of decay and regret, where no one can pretend that nothing ever happened.

In 2020, unable to travel to Mozambique, Ico Costa asked Ailucha and Domingos to film their daily lives with a camera he had left in Inhambane the previous year.
The camera acquired a special presence in the group, recording the teenage life, the working, the playing, the hanging around, the singing and dancing, the desire.

Diomar é nome e figura central no processo de resistência do antigo porto da Calheta, um bairro de pescadores que deixou de ter acesso ao mar, perdendo o seu pequeno porto de pesca para dar continuidade à construção de uma avenida marginal que é hoje uma “promenade” de hotéis e casinos. Escolhido para representar este tema, Diomar é um personagem multifacetado, que desde sempre documentou a ilha de São Miguel através do seu canal de Youtube. A câmera que empunha é como uma arma contra o tempo para defender as suas memórias, porque afinal “recordar é viver”.
Diomar is the name and the central figure in the process of resistance of the old port of Calheta, a fishermen’s neighborhood that no longer had access to the sea, losing its small fishing port in order to carry on the construction of a waterfront boulevard, which is today a “promenade” of hotels and casinos.
Chosen to represent this subject, Diomar is a multifaceted character, who has always documented the island of São Miguel through his Youtube channel. The camera he wields is like a weapon against time to protect his memories, because after all “to remember is to live again”.
