Many cities or countries have a distinct malaise. They are places that could be Portugal, so sunk in a painful longing of the past, and where each tension of the present is only the tip of an iceberg that is explained in successive retreats that can go straight until origin of the species, at least. This feeling common to many latitudes is often presented as a diagnosis, a denial of a painful present as opposed to the desire to return to a glorious past.

Num dia quente e febril, Claire falta às aulas para se encontrar com uns amigos na floresta, onde as suas memórias, traumas e desejos se fundem com lágrimas, suor e esperma.
On a hot and febrile day, teenage Claire ditches school to meet some friends in the woods where her memories, traumas and desires merge into tears, sweat, and sperm in a reflection on this generation’s sexual and existential disorientation.

After committing a crime, a man hides in the forest. Shot in the Portuguese highlands, in 16mm, the film follows Henrique, a solitary man running away from his life and from the world. In a progressively immersive style, you are transported into this space of solitude, in search of what really moves the protagonist. Different generations and backgrounds meet, Angola to Sao Tome, Cabo Verde and Guine Bissau represented by old musicians and young producers.
The word ‘campo’ (field) comes from the Latin ‘capere’ (to capture). “Campo de Marte” (The Field of Mars) was in the ancient times Rome’s training arena for war. At the outskirts of Lisbon, “Campo” hosts today Europe’s largest military base. In this place military troops train fictional missions, astronomy aficionados observe the stars and a boy plays the piano for the wild deers lurking in the dark. In here, I saw life manifesting itself with its contradictory and mysterious dimensions. CAMPO reflects on the nature of the mundane and the transcendental, as they reveal themselves inextricably intertwined.

High among the mountains, a man endures alone in a disappearing village. Wandering through the misty nature, roaming between the walls of his dark house, he bewails his condition as a man doomed to serve the surrounding he has rejected.

Quando me mudei para um novo bairro no Porto, não sabia onde estacionar a mota. Os locais disseram-me que ali, durante a noite, o sítio mais seguro era ao lado de Diana – a figura protetora do bairro que todos respeitavam e de quem, ao mesmo tempo, ninguém se aproximava. Após um ano de estacionamentos e de breves saudações mútuas, decidi perguntar a Diana se aceitava que fizesse um filme-retrato dela. Respondeu que o meu pedido não era, para ela, uma surpresa. Que sempre tinha pressentido que íamos fazer algo importante juntos. Assim começou o verde do jardim.
From Regina’s personal and visual memories, a tribute to her uncle Thomas, a humble man with a simple and anonymous life. This is my acknowledgment how one does not have to be « somebody” to become exceptional in our life.
