Biografia – Realizador

Catarina Alves Costa é uma cineasta e antropóloga portuguesa. Dirigiu, entre outros filmes, Margot (2022), Um Quarto de Casa (2016), Falemos de António Campos (2010), Nacional 206 (2009), O Arquiteto e a Aldeia Velha (2004), Nossa Senhora Aparecida (1994) e co-realizou Um Ramadão em Lisboa (2019). Lançou recentemente o livro Camponeses no Cinema, 2022. O seu último filme, Margot, foi exibido em festivais como DocLisboa, DOK.Fest Munchen, ETHNOCINECA em Viena, Festival Internacional de Cinema Etnográfico de Taiwan, Festival VIZANTROP Belgrado, Ethnofest- Atenas e ganhou o Grande Prémio de Filme Etnográfico no Festival de Documentário de Tóquio. É professora na Universidade Nova de Lisboa nas áreas de Antropologia Visual e Cinema, com uma longa carreira como cineasta internacional. Atualmente dirige o Centro de Investigação em Antropologia, CRIA.

Catarina Alves Costa is a portuguese filmmaker and anthropologist. She directed, among other films, Margot (2022), A Room in the House (2016), Let’s talk about António Campos (2010), National 206 (2009), The Architect and the Old Village (2004), Our lady Aparecida (1994) and co-directed A Ramadan in Lisbon (2019). She recently released the book Peasants in the Cinema, 2022. Her last film, Margot was shown in festivals such as DocLisboa, DOK.Fest Munchen, ETHNOCINECA in Vienna, Taiwan International Ethnographic Film Festival, VIZANTROP Festival Belgrade, Ethnofest- Athens and won the Grand Prize for Ethnographic Film at the Tokyo Documentary Film Festival. She’s a Professor at Nova University of Lisbon in the fields of Visual Anthropology and Film with a long career as an international filmmaker. She now directs the Centre for Research in Anthropology, CRIA.

Statement / Declaração

Em 2000 fiz o filme Mais Alma que aborda o panorama artístico das diversas ilhas cabo-verdianas. Neste filme, Pantera tem uma aparência fugaz. Mas nunca esquecerei a primeira vez que ouvi sua música. Fiquei profundamente emocionado e não entendi, então, a originalidade e a força de sua música. Ele morreu quando eu estava editando o filme. Mas eu ainda tinha muito material que uso agora, muitos anos depois. As imagens que tirei pareciam distantes e eu precisava de uma nova perspectiva sobre o assunto. Então resolvi voltar e ver como sua alma e luz ainda estavam por aí e conhecer sua filha Darlene, que tinha apenas 6 anos quando seu pai morreu. Descobri que o Pantera parecia sintetizar a alma crioula, ele se tornou esse herói, esse cometa que morre sem deixar rastros e as lembranças de quem viveu, trabalhou e tocou com ele. Neste filme quis devolver os tons quentes, numa viagem ao lado trágico da vida, subitamente interrompida pela morte.

Statement / Declaration (English)

In 2000 I made the film Mais Alma [More Soul] which deals with the art scene of the various capverdian islands. In this film, Pantera has a fleeting appearance. But I will never forget the first time I heard his music. I was deeply touched and didn’t understand, then, the originality and strength of his music. He died when I was editing the film. But I still had a lot of material that I am using now, many years after. The images I had shot seemed far away and I needed a new perspective on the subject. So I decided to go back and see how his soul and light was still around and meet her daughter Darlene, that was only 6 years old when her father died. I found out that Pantera seemed to synthesize the Creole soul, he became this hero, this comet that dies without leaving behind traces and the memories of those who lived, worked, and played music with him. In this film I wanted to devolve the warm tones, on a trip to the tragic side of life, suddenly interrupted by death.
