Sinopse Lisboa, 2027. Três anos depois da instalação de novos cabos submarinos de comunicação entre Portugal Continental, Açores e Madeira, um grupo de cientistas luta para conseguir manter o financiamento da sua investigação. Marta e Miguel, uma sismóloga e um oceanógrafo, fazem parte do grupo, mas vêem-se em desacordo em relação a várias questões científicas. Fora do trabalho são um casal. Quando numa noite Marta recebe dados que apontam para a possibilidade de um sismo devastador abalar Lisboa nas horas seguintes, discussões éticas e científicas dividem o grupo, colocando mais uma vez este casal em polos opostos. Lisbon, 2027. Three years after laying new underwater communication cables between mainland Portugal, the Azores and Madeira, a group of scientists is struggling to maintain funding for their research. Created around the technological opportunities arising from the laying of new cables, the LEA – Listening to the Earth Under the Atlantic Network) – is made up of physicists, seismologists and oceanographers. Marta, the head of the group of seismologists, is an idealist and believes that science may one day answer all the great questions of humanity. On the other side, in the group of oceanographers, Miguel is dedicated to investigating climate change and its possible impact from observing the deep ocean. Marta and Miguel are a couple in their private lives, but they often find themselves at opposite poles when it comes to scientific discussions. This conflict will be put to test on one decisive night when the parameters that Marta is analyzing point to the very high probability of a major earthquake hitting Lisbon in the next 30 hours. The group splits in ethical and scientific discussions, debating whether or not to warn the population for the possible impending tragedy. As in Ibsen’s “The Enemy of the People”, the ethical issue prevails above all the others: on the one hand, an advance notice could save many lives; on the other, if it is a false alarm, the widespread panic caused by this information could have very serious consequences – besides, obviously, it could put their own careers at risk. Having such a major decision about the fate of a city and of so many lives on their hands, they will have to pick which path to follow.
