Sinopse
Marcielle (13 anos) vive nas margens do Amazonas, com o pai, a mãe e os três irmãos. Sonha ser como a irmã mais velha, que fugiu com “um homem bom” que conheceu nos barcos que atravessam a região. À medida que amadurece, as suas idealizações começam a ruir e Marcielle vê-se presa entre dois ambientes abusivos. Preocupada com a irmã mais nova e ciente de que o futuro não lhe reserva muitas opções, ela decide confrontar a engrenagem violenta que rege a sua família e as mulheres da sua comunidade.
Synopsis (English)
Marcielle (13 years old) lives on the banks of the Amazon with her father, mother, and three siblings. She dreams of being like her older sister, who ran away with “a good man” she met on the boats that cross the region. As she grows up, her idealisations begin to collapse, and Marcielle finds herself trapped between two abusive environments. Worried about her younger sister and aware that the future does not hold many options for her, she decides to confront the violent system that governs her family and the women of her community.
Biografia – Realizador
Depois de se licenciar em cinema na UCSB, Marianna Brennand regressou ao Brasil para fazer um documentário sobre o seu tio-avô Francisco, um artista brasileiro globalmente reconhecido pelo seu trabalho em cerâmica. Investindo numa abordagem narrativa poética baseada nos diários da sua personagem, Francisco Brennand estreou em 2012 e ganhou Melhor Documentário Brasileiro e Melhor Filme Brasileiro no Festival de Cinema de São Paulo. Anteriormente, em 2007, Brennand realizou outro documentário, O Coco, a Roda, o Pnêu e o Farol, sobre a rica tradição musical do “coco de roda” em Olinda, cidade do estado de Pernambuco. Manas marca a estreia de Brennand na realização de longas-metragens e é o resultado de uma investigação de dez anos sobre o tema complexo e delicado do abuso sexual e exploração de crianças e adolescentes na Ilha de Marajó, na floresta Amazónica.
Biography – Director (English)
After graduating with a degree in film at UCSB, Marianna Brennand returned to Brazil to make a documentary about her great-uncle Francisco, a Brazilian artist globally recognized for his ceramic work. Investing in a poetic narrative approach based on her character’s diaries, Francisco Brennand premiered in 2012 and won both Best Brazilian Documentary and Best Brazilian Film at the São Paulo Film Festival. Earlier, in 2007, Brennand directed another documentary, O Coco, a Roda, o Pnêu e o Farol, about the rich musical tradition of “coco de roda” in Olinda, a city in the state of Pernambuco. Manas marks Brennand’s feature film directorial debut and is the result of a ten-year research into the complex and delicate subject of the sexual abuse and exploitation of children and teenagers on Marajó Island, in the Amazon rainforest.
