Biografia – Realizador

JOÃO VIEIRA TORRES, artista/cineasta/escritor brasileiro-francês, nascido no Recife, Brasil. Desde 2002, vive e trabalha entre a França e o Brasil. É mestre em fotografia e vídeo pela École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, realizou uma residência pós-graduada no Le Fresnoy – Studio National des Arts Contemporains, e doutorou-se em Documento e Arte Contemporânea na École Européenne Supérieure de l’Image.(NEWLINE)(NEWLINE)A sua prática combina fotografia, cinema, videoarte, performance, escrita, desenho e investigação teórica. Um dos focos principais do seu trabalho é a questão da “alteridade”, explorando formas de instabilidade e pontos de rutura nas perspetivas que dela emergem. Interessa-se particularmente pelas possibilidades e necessidades de encontrar um ponto de ancoragem, seja territorial, identitário, histórico ou corporal.(NEWLINE)(NEWLINE)O seu trabalho tem sido apresentado em diversos eventos internacionais e foi reconhecido com numerosas bolsas e prémios, incluindo: Flaherty Seminar (EUA), Art of the Real Lincoln Center (EUA), Centre Pompidou (FR), International Film Festival Rotterdam (NL), Mostra Olhar de Cinema – vencedor por duas vezes do Prémio de Melhor Curta-Metragem Brasileira (BR), Palais de Tokyo (FR), entre outros.(NEWLINE)(NEWLINE)O seu filme mais recente, AURORA, foi apresentado como performance work-in-progress no Festival Hors Piste (Centre Pompidou) e como projeto em desenvolvimento no Doc Station (Berlinale). Foi premiado com o Brouillon d’un rêve pela Scam e Cnap (FR) e recebeu financiamento do CNC (FR), ICA (PT), BNDES (BR), sendo coproduzido pela Riofilme (BR).

JOÀO VIEIRA TORRES, a Brazilian-French artist/filmmaker/writer, born in Recife, Brazil. Since 2002, he lives and works between France andBrazil. He holds a master’s degree in photography and video from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, a post-graduate residency at Le Fresnoy – Studio Nationale des Arts Contemporains, and a doctorate in Document and Contemporary Art at the École Européenne Supérieure de l’Image. His practice combines photography, film, video art, performance, writing, drawing, and theoretical research. One of the main focuses of his work is the question of “otherness”, exploring forms of instability and breaking points in the perspectives that emerge from it. He is particularly interested in the possibilities and needs of finding an anchoring point, whether territorial, identity-based, historical, or corporeal. His work has been featured in various international events and has been recognized with numerous grants and awards, including: Flaherty Seminar (USA), Art of the Real Lincoln Center (USA), Centre Pompidou (FR), International Film Festival Rotterdam (NL), Mostra Olhar de Cinema – twice winner of the Best Brazilian Short Film Award (BR), Palais de Tokyo (FR), among others. His latest film, AURORA, was presented as a work-in-progress performance at the Festival Hors Piste (Centre Pompidou) and as a development project at Doc Station (Berlinale). It was awarded the Brouillon d’un rêve by Scam and Cnap (FR) and received funding from CNC (FR), ICA (PT), BNDES (BR), and was co-produced by Riofilme (BR).

Statement / Declaração

Tudo começou com um sonho no qual eu disse à minha mãe, em francês — uma língua que a minha mãe não fala —, que ia procurar as crianças que a minha avó paterna ajudou a nascer. O nome dela era Aurora. Era parteira e curandeira há mais de quarenta anos no sertão profundo e árido da Bahia, no nordeste do Brasil. Era agricultora e fazia isso por vocação. Não sabia ler nem escrever. Tinha o dom do fogo e da vida. Muitas crianças nasceram das suas mãos, nenhuma morreu no parto. Diz-se que as suas orações apagavam os fogos das estações secas. Eu nunca a conheci.(NEWLINE)(NEWLINE)No meu sonho, eu disse à minha mãe que ia “buscar Aurora”, procurar a aurora, a luz. A minha mãe perguntou se eu não tinha medo dos espíritos que assombravam as minhas noites quando era pequena. Eu respondi que, se houvesse espíritos, pelo menos não estaria sozinha. Ia buscar Aurora, a aurora, a luz, mas o que encontraria seria muito mais sombrio.(NEWLINE)(NEWLINE)Exilada há muitos anos noutro continente, fui subitamente assombrada pela presença da minha avó e pelos pesadelos do passado. Chamada a regressar às minhas raízes. Durante esta jornada de iniciação por uma região desertica assolada pelo agronegócio e pelo evangelismo fundamentalista, encontrei as mulheres da minha família, que me contaram sobre a maldição ancestral que pesa sobre elas e me contarão as histórias de cinco outras mulheres, ancestrais ou descendentes de Aurora, cinco fantasmas de uma história familiar composta por migração, colonialismo, violência, relações complexas de género e raça, e resistência — histórias que são todos fragmentos da genealogia assombrada de um país, o Brasil.

Statement / Declaration (English)

Everything began with a dream in which I told my mother, in French, a language my mother doesn’t speak, that I was going to search for the children my paternal grandmother had helped to be born. Her name was Aurora. She was a midwife and healer for more than forty years in the deep, arid hinterlands of Bahia, in northeastern Brazil. She was a farmer and did this as a vocation. She couldn’t read or write. She had the gift of fire and life. Many children were born from her hands, none of whom died in childbirth. It is said that her prayers extinguished the fires of the dry seasons. I never knew her. In my dream, I told my mother that I was going to “fetch Aurora,” to seek the dawn, the light. My mother asked if I wasn’t afraid of the spirits that haunted my nights when I was little. I answered that, if there were spirits, at least I wouldn’t be alone. I was going to seek Aurora, the dawn, the light, but what I would find would be much darker. Exiled for many years on another continent, I was suddenly haunted by the presence of my grandmother and the nightmares of the past. Called to return to my roots. During this initiation journey through a desert region plagued by agribusiness and fundamentalist evangelism, I met the women of my family, who told me about the ancestral curse that weighs upon them and will tell me the stories of five other women, ancestors or descendants of Aurora, five ghosts of a family history composed of migration, colonialism, violence, complex gender and racial relations, and resistance—stories that are all fragments of the haunted genealogy of a country, Brazil.
