Biografia – Realizador

Cineasta e artista nascido em Vigo (ESPANHA), 1983. Os seus filmes foram exibidos em festivais como Cannes, Berlinale, Locarno, Toronto, Roterdão, Nova Iorque, Viennale, IDFA, Cinema du réel, Oberhausen, Clermont-Ferrand… E teve retrospetivas sobre o seu trabalho em locais como o New York Film Festival (EUA), BAFICI (Argentina), Film Fest Gent (Bélgica), Festival de Cartagena e Cali (Colômbia), NeMAF (Coreia do Sul) ou o Flaherty Seminar (Universidade Colgate). Os seus filmes e instalaçÀµes vídeo foram exibidos nos auditórios de centros de arte como o MoMA ou o Centro Pompidou, e participaram em exposiçÀµes no MACBA, Casa Encendida ou CGAC. E em feiras de arte como ARCO, Estampa, SWAB, Paris Photo (França), Photo London (Reino Unido), Unseen (Amesterdão) ou a Trienal de Aichi (Japão). A Universidade de Harvard concedeu-lhe a Bolsa “Robert Fulton III” em 2016, destinada a cineastas emergentes “com espírito independente, que exploram culturas diversas com profunda sensibilidade estética”. “ARIEL” (2025 – IFF Roterdão), “SAMSARA” (2023 – Berlinale / Prémio Especial do Júri), “RED MOON TIDE” (2020 ““ Berlinale Forum) e “COAST OF DEATH” (2013 ““ Locarno / Prémio Melhor Realizador Emergente) são as suas quatro longas-metragens até À  data. As suas últimas duas curtas-metragens: “SYCORAX” (2021) e “THE SOWER OF STARS” (2022) estrearam na Quinzena dos Realizadores de Cannes e na Berlinale, respetivamente, recebendo um prémio neste último festival. Lois PatiÀ±o faz parte da geração de cineastas galegos denominada “Novo Cinema Galego”, juntamente com autores como Oliver Laxe, Eloy Enciso, Diana Toucedo, Alberto Gracia ou Jaione Camborda. À‰ representado pela Isabel Hurley Gallery (Málaga), RocíoSantaCruz Gallery (Barcelona) e Vilaseco Gallery (A Corunha).

Filmmaker and artist born in Vigo (SPAIN), 1983. His films have been shown at film festivals such as Cannes, Berlinale, Locarno, Toronto, Rotterdam, New York, Viennale, IDFA, Cinema du rèel, Oberhausen, Clermont-Ferrand… And he had focus about his work in places like the New York Film Festival (USA), BAFICI (Argentina), Film Fest Gent (Belgium), Cartagena and Cali Film Festival (Colombia), NeMAF (South Korea) or the Flaherty Seminar (Colgate University). His films and video installations have been shown in the theaters of art centers such as MoMA or Pompidou Center, and took part of exhibitions at MACBA, Casa Encendida or CGAC. And art fairs such as ARCO, Estampa, SWAB, Paris Photo (France), Photo London (UK), Unseen ( Amsterdam) or the Aichi Triennale (Japan). Harvard University awarded him the ‘Robert Fulton III’ Scholarship in 2016, intended for emerging filmmakers “with an independent spirit, who explore diverse cultures with a deep aesthetic sensibility.” ‘ARIEL’ (2025 – Rotterdam IFF), ‘SAMSARA’ (2023 – Berlinale / Special Jury Award), ‘RED MOON TIDE’ (2020 – Berlinale Forum) and ‘COAST OF DEATH’ (2013 – Locarno / Best Emerging Director Award) are his four feature films to date. His last two short films: ‘SYCORAX’ (2021) and ‘THE SOWER OF STARS’ (2022) have premiered in the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and in the Berlinale, respectively, receiving an award at the latter festival. Lois Patiño is part of the generation of Galician filmmakers named ‘Novo Cinema Galego’, along with authors such as Oliver Laxe, Eloy Enciso, Diana Toucedo, Alberto Gracia or Jaione Camborda. He is represented by Isabel Hurley Gallery (Málaga), RocíoSantaCruz Gallery (Barcelona) and Vilaseco Gallery (A Coruña).

Statement / Declaração

O projeto surgiu — em colaboração com Matías Piñeiro — do desejo de explorar A Tempestade, de Shakespeare, a partir da perspetiva da personagem Ariel — o espírito do ar. Mas, pouco a pouco, foi-se abrindo ao restante da obra do autor, para refletir sobre como e a partir de onde a poesia, a humanidade e a profundidade dos textos de Shakespeare nos podem interpelar nos dias de hoje. A Tempestade é a última obra do autor e contém um monólogo que tem sido interpretado como a despedida de Shakespeare ao seu público: um jogo entre a pessoa e a personagem, que exploramos no filme. É também a obra onde há uma presença mais marcante da natureza, e essa relação entre palavra e paisagem é outra das sementes de onde nasce o projeto. O objetivo de Ariel é alcançar a liberdade, e na peça há muitas reflexões em torno deste conceito — também sob leituras colonialistas. Interessava-nos girar em torno da ideia de liberdade, também a partir da perspetiva do medo da liberdade e do convite à aventura de viver. As nossas personagens, conscientes da falta de livre-arbítrio e cheias de dúvidas existenciais, debatem-se em torno dessa ideia. Os jogos metanarrativos entre realidade e ficção vão entrelaçando o nosso relato em múltiplas duplicidades. Habitamos uma ilha que se transforma em teatro e em limbo, onde as personagens vagueiam, como fantasmas, presas no interior da obra, num tempo suspenso, onde nem a morte as pode libertar. Statement / Declaration (English)

The project emerged — together with Matías Piñeiro — from a desire to explore The Tempest by Shakespeare from the perspective of the character Ariel — the spirit of the air. But little by little, it expanded to encompass the rest of the author’s work, reflecting on how and from where the poetry, humanity, and depth of Shakespeare’s texts can still speak to us today.(NEWLINE)The Tempest is Shakespeare’s final play, and it contains a monologue that has often been interpreted as the author’s farewell to his audience: a play between person and character, which we explore in the film. It is also the work with the strongest presence of nature, and this relationship between word and landscape is another of the seeds from which the project was born. (NEWLINE) Ariel’s goal is to achieve freedom, and there are many reflections on this concept throughout the play — including from colonial readings. We were interested in revolving around the idea of freedom also from the perspective of the fear of freedom and the invitation to the adventure of living. Our characters, aware of their lack of free will and full of existential doubts, struggle with this idea. (NEWLINE) The metanarrative play between reality and fiction weaves our story through multiple duplicities. We inhabit an island that becomes both theatre and limbo, where the characters wander like ghosts, trapped within the play, in a suspended time where not even death can release them.(NEWLINE)When from the world we no longer hear a murmur, what dreams may come in that sleep of death.
