Nuno Miranda é um cineasta cabo-verdiano radicado em Lisboa, conhecido por explorar temas de identidade através de um estilo poético e narrativo. O seu filme de estreia, “Kmêdeus”, teve a sua estreia mundial no International Film Festival Rotterdam em 2020. A sua curta recente, “A Última Colheita”, examina os imigrantes cabo-verdianos em Lisboa e os “portais” de identidade na diáspora. Está atualmente a desenvolver a sua primeira longa-metragem, “The Flowers of the Dead”, aprofundando o seu compromisso com uma estética visual e narrativa única para o cinema cabo-verdiano.

Nuno Miranda is a Cape Verdean filmmaker based in Lisbon, known for exploring themes of identity through a poetic style and narrative. His debut film, “Kmêdeus,” premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2020. His recent short, “The Last Harvest,” examines Cape Verdean immigrants in Lisbon and the identity “portals” in the diaspora. He is currently developing his first feature, “The Flowers of the Dead,” furthering his commitment to a unique visual and narrative aesthetic for Cape Verdean cinema.

Esta história desenrola-se no limiar entre dois mundos: o sentimento de pertença e alienação, entre Cabo Verde e o centro urbano de Lisboa, da perspetiva da comunidade cabo-verdiana. O filme pretende criar uma ponte entre o espaço físico das raízes e o espaço da memória. Ao longo da narrativa, procuramos humanizar as questões complexas da saudade sob o ponto de vista do emigrante, destacando como estas experiências moldam as suas identidades. Tendo vivido tanto em Portugal como em Cabo Verde, a minha intenção é conectar estes dois espaços, refletindo sobre as experiências daqueles que migram em busca de um futuro melhor, mas enfrentam desafios de adaptação e a luta pelo reconhecimento. Através das histórias das personagens, o filme dá voz e visibilidade aos portais de memória dos emigrantes cabo-verdianos, revelando as suas dores, desejos e esperanças. As hortas urbanas clandestinas surgem como símbolo desta luta pela identidade, servindo como espaços de resistência cultural onde os emigrantes tentam manter vivas as suas raízes.

Statement / Declaration (English)

This story takes place on the threshold between two worlds: the feeling of belonging and alienation, between Cape Verde and the urban center of Lisbon, from the perspective of the Cape Verdean community. The film aims to create a bridge between the physical space of roots and the space of memory. Throughout the narrative, we seek to humanize the complex issues of longing from the emigrant’s viewpoint, highlighting how these experiences shape their identities. Having lived in both Portugal and Cape Verde, my intention is to connect these two spaces, reflecting on the experiences of those who migrate in search of a better future but face challenges of adaptation and the struggle for recognition. Through the characters’ stories, the film gives voice and visibility to the memory portals of Cape Verdean emigrants, revealing their pains, desires, and hopes. Urban clandestine gardens emerge as a symbol of this fight for identity, serving as spaces of cultural resistance where emigrants try to recreate the peace of their origins amid urban chaos. By exploring these dynamics, the film not only portrays the community’s reality but also celebrates their resilience and the strength of the bonds that remain alive, even in the face of distance and longing. Thus, the narrative becomes a profound reflection on belonging, memory, and identity.
