Biografia – Realizador

João Cândido Zacharias nasceu em 1981 no Rio de Janeiro. É bacharel em Cinema pela Universidade Federal Fluminense. Após se formar, trabalhou por quatro anos na Filme B, revista online focada no mercado cinematográfico brasileiro. Em 2009, criou e dirigiu a série documental Peça Piloto, sobre o processo criativo de designers de moda emergentes. Em 2012, também criou e dirigiu outro projeto para TV, Música.doc, uma série de documentários sobre a vida de jovens músicos brasileiros. Atuou como roteirista de projetos como os longas-metragens Danado de Bom e Forense, e na tratamento do longa Meninas Balseiras. Com grande interesse pelo cinema de gênero, foi programador do RioFan (Rio Fantastic Fest). Em 2017, dirigiu o curta Sandra Calling. Em 2019, dirigiu o curta-metragem Os Últimos Românticos. Seu primeiro longa-metragem é um filme do gênero Birthright, em fase final de pós-produção.

Biography – Director (English)

João Cândido Zacharias was born in 1981 in Rio de Janeiro. He has a BA in Film from Universidade Federal Fluminense. After graduating, he worked for four years for Filme B, an online magazine focused on the Brazilian film market. In 2009, he created and directed the documentary TV series Peça Piloto, on the creative process of upand-coming fashion designers. In 2012, he also created and directed another TV project, Música.doc, a series of documentaries on the life of young Brazilian musicians. He has worked as a screenwriter for projects such as the feature documentaries Danado de Bom and Forensics, and the treatment for the feature Meninas Balseiras. With a great interest in genre cinema, he was a programmer for RioFan (Rio Fantastic Fest). In 2017, he directed the short film Sandra Calling. In 2019, he directed the short film The Last Romantics. His first feature film is a genre film called Birthright, in the late stages of post-production.

Statement / Declaração

O terror, tanto na literatura quanto no cinema, é conhecido por ser o gênero que melhor se propõe a metaforizar as doenças do mundo, desde os contos de fadas dos Irmãos Grimm até a obra de José Mojica Marins. Portanto, não surpreende que o gênero viva uma nova era de ouro em todo o mundo, e que no Brasil esteja tendo seu despertar. BIRTHRIGHT é uma história focada no fantasma de uma herança que faz com que Thomas, nosso jovem protagonista, enfrente suas origens, descobrindo segredos terríveis e novos significados para sua própria existência. O filme se desdobra a partir de dois formatos interativos que aos poucos serão contaminados um pelo outro: o primeiro é uma direção mais clássica e o segundo é a linguagem contemporânea do diário-filmado. O eixo temático principal é a ideia subjetiva de herança, o que trazemos dentro de nós que vem desde o nascimento versus o que desenvolvemos por conta própria, ou o eterno embate natureza versus cultura, bem como o peso esmagador da tradição.

Statement / Declaration (English)

Horror, both in literature and in cinema, is known to be the genre that best proposes to metaphorize the world’s illnesses, from the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm to the work of José Mojica Marins. Therefore, it is not surprising that the genre is living a new golden age all over the world, and that in Brazil it is having its awakening. BIRTHRIGHT is a story focused on the ghost of an inheritance that causes Thomas, our young protagonist, to face his origins, discovering terrible secrets and new meaning for his own existence. The film unfolds from two interacting formats that will gradually be contaminated by each other: the first is a more classical direction and the second is the contemporary language of the filmed-diary. The main thematic axis is the subjective idea of inheritance, what we bring inside us that comes from birth vs. what we develop on our own, or the eternal clash nature vs. culture, as well as the crushing weight of tradition.
