Biografia – Realizador

Kester Läufer é um futuro cineasta de Hamburgo, Alemanha. Nascido em 1998, teve contato com o cinema pela primeira vez durante o ensino médio. Começou a filmar, dirigir e editar vídeos esportivos, comerciais, curtas e filmes experimentais. Em 2020, mudou-se para Berlim para estudar Cinema e Filosofia. NIGHT PIECES é uma produção cinematográfica estudantil com financiamento totalmente independente.

Biography – Director (English)

Kester Läufer is an upcoming filmmaker from Hamburg, Germany. Born 1998, he first came in touch with filmmaking during high school. He started shooting, directing, and editing sports videos, ads, shorts and experimental films. In 2020, he moved to Berlin to study Film and Philosophy. NIGHT PIECES is a fully independently funded student film production.

Statement / Declaração

Para mim, o estilo e o conteúdo de um filme moldam-se mutuamente e não podem ser separados. Estou contando uma história sobre ver versus ser visto; e sobre a dor causada por isso. O imaginário drástico é a minha linguagem para comunicar a dor que os personagens vivenciaram ao nível das suas relações, traduzindo-a para a esfera física, os corpos. Dentro disso, a luz atua como o Leitmotiv. A luz como personagem surreal e ininteligível influencia seu comportamento de uma forma que eles não conseguem compreender. É uma entidade que os fascina, atrai e, em última análise, deslumbra. O que parece tentador está além da sua compreensão, deixando-os presos a si mesmos. Isto se aplica à luz, à luxúria dos adolescentes e à televisão em casa; até o mais novo já é movido por isso. A situação dos personagens – estando neste ambiente surreal, não verbalizável – é mutuamente a situação dos espectadores. Quase não há diálogo falado. Este filme é sobre ver e sentir, cinema físico. A cinematografia claro-escuro mostra que no mundo há trevas, a menos que acendamos uma luz. A linguagem visual e a história estão se criando. Quero esgotar o poder da comunicação visual que é a força do meio. Quero contar esta história radicalmente visual na tradição do poder dos filmes mudos. As imagens podem chegar onde as palavras não chegam, porque a sua força é permanecerem ambíguas e obscuras.

Statement / Declaration (English)

For me, the style and content of a film shape each other and cannot be separated. I’m telling a story about seeing vs. being seen; and about the pain caused by that. The drastic imagery is my language to communicate the pain that the characters have experienced on the level of their relationships, translating it to the physical sphere, the bodies. Within that the light acts as the Leitmotif. The light as a surreal, unintelligible character influences their behavior in a way they cannot understand. It is an entity which fascinates them, attracts them and ultimately dazzles them. What seems to be tempting is beyond their understanding, leaving them trapped with themselves. This applies to the light, the teenagers’ lust, and the television at home; even the youngest is already driven by it. The characters’ situation – being in this surreal environment, non-verbalizable – is mutually the spectators’ situation. There is hardly any spoken dialogue. This film is all about seeing and feeling, physical cinema. The chiaroscuro cinematography shows that in the world there is darkness unless we shine a light. The visual language and the story are creating each other. I want to exhaust the power of visual communication which is the strength of the medium. I want to tell this radically visual story in the tradition of the power of silent films. Images can go where words can’t, because their strength is to remain ambiguous and obscure.
