Biografia – Realizador

Nishchaya Gera é um realizador e argumentista atualmente baseado em Bruxelas. As suas curtas-metragens foram exibidas em mais de 100 festivais de cinema em todo o mundo e ganharam vários prémios. A sua primeira curta, ‘Scar Tissue’, foi selecionada como finalista do Iris Prize. Deslocamento, queernesss e a política sexual dos nossos tempos são temas centrais no seu trabalho. Está atualmente a trabalhar no seu primeiro projeto de longa-metragem ‘The Taj Motel’, que foi selecionado para os Torino Film Labs. Nish nasceu na Índia e viveu em Udaipur, Nova Deli, Mumbai, Nova Iorque, Berlim e Londres.

Biography – Director (English)

Nishchaya Gera is a director and screenwriter currently based in Brussels. His short films have screened in over 100 film festivals worldwide and have won several awards. His first short, ‘Scar Tissue’, was selected as a finalist for the Iris Prize. Displacement, queerness and the sexual politics of our times are central themes in his work. He is currently working on his first feature project ‘The Taj Motel’, which was selected for Torino Film Labs. Nish was born in India and has lived in Udaipur, New Delhi, Mumbai, New York City, Berlin and London.

“Ele ainda retinha alguma lembrança vaga e ténue do propósito geral da visão, no entanto, todo o resto tinha passado como as imagens na superfície de um sonho.” Tal como Coleridge nas suas reflexões sobre Kubla Khan e a interrupção do mundo no sonho de ópio da sua visão poética, o filme pergunta: O que é o prazer? Demasiadas vezes aceitamos o sonho febril do trabalho e os seus objetivos instrumentais sem sentido sobre os sonhos que temos de prazer e imersão nos poderes sensuais dos nossos corpos. Ao acompanhamento meditativo do Cântico dos Cânticos, um dos poemas mais antigos sobre a divindade da intimidade com o mundo natural e o amor físico, o filme é uma exploração desta ideia: quanto mais conscientemente compreendemos como outros podem querer vincular-nos, mais livres nos tornamos. E poderia ser que, uma vez que compreendemos a forma como estamos vinculados, mais somos capazes de desfrutar da bacanal dos nossos sentidos e da cornucópia do mundo?

Statement / Declaration (English)

‘He still retained some vague and dim recollection of the general purport of the vision, yet, all the rest had passed away like the images on the surface of a stream into which a stone has been cast.’ Like Coleridge in his reflections on Kubla Khan and the interruption of the world into the opium dream of his poetic vision, the film asks: What is pleasure? Too often we accept the fever dream of work and its meaningless instrumental goals over the dreams we have of pleasure and immersion in our bodies’ sensuous powers. To the meditative accompaniment of The Song of Songs, one of the most ancient poems about the divinity of intimacy with the natural world and physical love, the film is an exploration of this idea: the more we consciously understand how others may want to bind us, the freer we become. And could it be that once we understand the way we are bound, the more we are able to enjoy the bacchanal of our senses and the cornucopia of the world?
