What does it mean to be a young person in Zone J? “Chelas nha Kau” was born of the desire a group of friends had to tell their story, and that of the neighbourhood they live in. With an insider’s gaze, they accuse “outsiders” of basing their views on prejudices peddled by the media. But, in the film, they give them a second opportunity: “They see a problematic neighbourhood, that’s all they see, but no… They should come here to see what it’s really like.” We recorded the music in a basement, we transformed window ledges into tripods and used mobile phones to film universes that would be difficult to capture with a professional video camera. “Will we actually make a film like the ones you see at the cinema?” Four years ago, no one knew, really, the answer to this question. “Chelas nha Kau” is the result of a process of experimentation and exchange, that developed organically with no fixed idea as to what the end result would be. It was produced and directed collectively by Bataclan 1950 – a group of friends from Chelas, a social housing project neighbourhood of Lisbon – and by Bagabaga Studios. By revealing the perspective of the multiple individuals who pick up the camera and focus on what, for them, is important, the result is a polyphonic film that rejects the usual hierarchy of cinema d’auteur.
