Two retired detectives, who were active during the Brazilian dictatorship, must confront the past when asked to depose to a Truth Commission regarding their investigation into the suicide of an artist and his infamous last masterpiece.

This is a film about narratives. Brazil went through a brutal military dictatorship, which to this day still hasn’t been properly talked about and processed. A large portion of the country’s population believes the dictatorship was good for the country, and even asks for it to come back, evidenced by the election of Jair Bolsonaro, a right wing politician who proclaimed publicly that Col. Carlos Brilhante Ustra, the most notorious torturer from the military dictatorship, was and will always be a hero to him. A few Truth Comissions have been established since Brazil transitioned to a very unstable democracy, the first of which this film depicts. But, as you will watch in the film, truth is a lot harder to pin down than it seems. Especially when what’s at stake is the narrative about what actually happened during the dictatorship in Brazil, a narrative which has the power to tip the power balance between totalitarianism and democracy.
