Sinopse Original Original Sinopsis

Sinopse Internacional Sinopsis

In a rural setting, an old man is told his dead wife was seen at the market. Spiteful and sad, he chooses to hide away from the rest of the world. However, his friends insist that he shouldn’t listen to hearsay. They say he should try to recover and, who knows, even remarry. It’s a story about the delicateness of old age, of what is still left to dream and love when you reach this life stage and the body weakens. It takes place in an ancient and hidden Portugal that still exists in spite of our efforts of modernization.

Mensagem do Realizador Director Statement
(English) SURDINE is a simple story about a Portuguese reality that is absolutely intrinsic to our society: social pressure and the need to create a façade and a typical behaviour in favour of social acceptance. On the other hand, it is also a reflection on the old versus the old, on loneliness and the need for one’s own space. It is my intention to portray this reality taking into account the environment in which it is inserted, the historical centre of Guimarães and São Cristóvão de Selho, using them as characters. Its streets and houses and visual strength in contrast with the reality they hide. It is my intention to film the intimate life of this space as that of the characters that inhabit it. The historic centre of Guimarães, usually shown as a postcard, is seen here beyond the beautiful facades. The intimacy of this reality is the nature of small neighbourhood’s’ relations. I wanted to make a film from an intense text written with the force of Valter Hugo Mãe, with hard and direct dialogues that reflect the violent punctuation of the typically northern speech. But with the coincident particularity of the writer’s origin (in Guimarães) and his knowledge of the expressions and typical musicality of the region printed in the mastery of dialogues. This is a reality that is very close to me, as well as the lives of the people who inhabit the historical centre of my city. It is an aging population without large possessions whose only material wealth are their homes. They do not abdicate or sell the houses for any price. As well, they cannot abdicate their identity. It is a great pride for me that valter hugo mãe accepted this challenge so passionately, and also that he noticed my umbilical relationship with a space and people in transformation and felt my urgency to portray it. We visited spaces, houses and taverns and I introduced him to the people who inhabit this space full of history, which he fell in love too. With this film have the intention of telling a simple story in a personal way that can communicate to a wide audience, both nationally and internationally, and in this own cultural specificity that some claim to universality may lie. I believe that the dialogues, in Minho style, are included in a line of comedy of customs so underexplored in our national cinematography. Here the intention is that this universality of the history and the dialogues intensity are assumed to be of a nonurban reality though in the heart of a city, where the psychological space of the main character is always locked in a cage. I believe this film, striving for the exploration of situations that may seem to start from the absurd, but are highly rooted in the culture in which I insert and identify as mine. In the song writing part, we’ll have Tó Trips (or Dead Combo, as Tó would rather sign) than take over. I think the melancholy tone of his compositions fits like a glove in this movie. Between folk and guitar fado, I think this is the ideal composer for this movie. And it is very gratifying to me that he agreed to do so. The constant presence of rain is another difficult Minho feature to overcome. We spent the film fleeing in the rain, waiting for openings to be able to maintain some continuity, given the tight means of production; it was never possible to “control” the weather. I know that using non-actors to act opposite to actors is risky, but it always resulted in motivation. On the other hand, it is fundamental for me that some of the people that inspired the film took a part in it.
