Sabem, quando eu era uma criança, apaixonei-me pela Virgem Maria, aconteceu numa pequena aldeia da Baviera chamada Altötting.

“You know, when I was a boy, I fell in love with the Virgin Mary. It happened in a little Bavarian town called Altötting.” Mesmerizing, haunting, and deeply personal, Altötting is a coming-of-age story about love, faith, mortality, and shattered illusions.

In the center of the little town I grew up, ALTÖTTING, there´s little chapel. that´s been built to praise the Virgin Mary. The roundabout of this chapel is plastered with thousands of paintings showing suffering protagonists in loving embracement with their goddess. As a child I visited this chapel daily to be close to Mary. It was the beginning of an intense relationship that went through different stages: The tenderness of childhood, the love of youth, the disillusion of adolescence and the farewell. Today I visit the chapel like the grave of an old lover. The film ALTÖTTING wants to show the process of connecting with religion, getting to bloom through religion and saying good bye to religion from a personal point of view. The different stages of the religious experience are shown in form of a love story: „The tenderness of childhood“ symbolises the first contact with religion because of fear of death. „The love of youth“ symbolises unity with religion in a fearless space. „The disillusion of adolescence“ symbolises the understanding of religion as virtual reality. „The farewell“ symbolises the emancipation from religion, which sets the basis for moving towards the secular world.
ALTÖTTING has two visual levels: The stylised „Reality“-world and the visual more opulent „Virgin Mary“-world. The „Virgin Mary“-world will be brought to full bloom through the participation of internationally renowned filmmaker Regina Pessoa. Her style and special technique will give these parts of the film the magic and poetry that´s needed. The music of ALTÖTTING will have a strong emotional power. The soundtrack will be based on Schuberts AVE MARIA and will be developed and executed in cooperation with the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). With ALTÖTTING I want to continue a story I started with WE LIVE IN GRASS (1995), RING OF FIRE (2000) and THE RUNT (2005). Each of these films show a different aspect of masculinity, in case of ALTÖTTING it´s masculinity and religion. I think this is an important subject in times of eruptions of religious madness.
Finally, ALTÖTTING will be part of the animated feature film MY FUNERAL, that will be released 5 days after my death.

Biografia do Realizador Director Biography
Andreas Hykade was born during the summer of love in the Bavarian town of Altötting, “the Lourdes of Germany,” famous for its chapel housing a popular shrine to the Virgin Mary. He’s been directing animated films for grown-ups since he became one himself; now that he’s a dad, he creates animated films for children as well. Hykade has been the director of the Animationsinstitut at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg and the Conference Chair of FMX since 2015.
