Mensagem do Realizador Director Statement
Discovering the first love was such a memorable period of my life that I felt the need to do a project with this theme. This was the starting point of “I Don’t Like 5 PM”, a short film based on my first love with a girl from a different country. Since it was an impossible love, our connection was intense and emotional. On the other hand, time with one another was running out, which made us enjoy the moments we spent together as much as we could. Because we see the world in a different light when we are truly in love, I wanted to make a film closer to a documentary. Together with my first love, I travelled through Norway, Poland and Portugal. On those travels, I took photographs and recorded videos, which I use to build the film. Despite this cinematographic language not being new, it is certainly unusual. Time and movement, pillars of cinema, are present in videos. But are they also present in photographs? Can these be used in a cinematic way? By raising these questions, I look not only to understand what cinema is, but also to develop my own cinematographic language. The photographs and videos which I use in the film are portraits or landscapes. Each person contains a universe within himself. It is this complexity that I want to show when I photograph. A face reveals a lot, but hides much more. Besides being the places I crossed while travelling, the landscapes appear in the film as a space of self-discovery and of relation with the other. A welcoming place that cultivates the best within us, but at the same time reminds that we cannot move mountains. “I Don’t Like 5 PM” gravitates towards the search of the first love, its experience and the separation. At the end of the relationship, only its memory remains. But as time goes by, it gets progressively dimmer. In this way, the film takes us on a journey through time, preserving it simultaneously. Therefore, this short film is the indelible memory of an impossible first love.

Biografia do Realizador Director Biography
Francisco Dias nasceu em 1999 no Porto, em Portugal. Em 2017, entrou com bolsa de mérito para a Licenciatura em Som e Imagem da Escola das Artes da Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Em 2018, realizou a curta-metragem documental “Maremória”, que estreou no concerto do compositor Cândido Lima “Memórias de Viana – anos depois…”. Em 2019, estudou um semestre na Volda University College, na Noruega, onde realizou a curta-metragem de ficção “In Sanity: Sadness & Joy”, selecionada para o FEST – New Directors/New Films Festival. Em 2020, realizou a curta-metragem “I Don’t Like 5 PM”, uma viagem de descoberta do primeiro amor, que venceu a competição Take One do Curtas Vila do Conde – International Film Festival. No mesmo ano, entrou com bolsa de mérito para o Mestrado em Cinema da Escola das Artes da Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Enraizados na sua cultura e nas suas experiências pessoais, os seus filmes têm retratado o mar, a poesia, o crescimento e as relações humanas.
