My father has a gun is a video that tells the story of Mendes’ father as a young soldier, during the Portuguese colonial war in Guine-Bissau, whilst questioning the role of photography in the business of war.

Mensagem do Realizador Director Statement
Mendes develops works in which she uses video, film, photography, language, drawing and installation to speak on issues such as memory, language and identity. Mendes’ work is based on concept and idea, and created using fewer resources as possible. In her videos and projects, Mendes is interested in using experimental techniques that open up the dialog between different disciplines, namely video/film and photography or performance.

Biografia do Realizador Director Biography
Ana Mendes is a visual artist and writer, living and working in London and Stockholm. She studied video at the Royal Institute of Art Stockholm, 2018, and animation film at La Poudriere ecole du film d’Animation, Valence, France, 2008. Her videos have been shown at numerous festivals and galleries worldwide, including Kasseler Doc-Fest (2016), Sharja Film Platform (2019) and the Berlinale Talent Campus (2009). Her video On Drawing was the recipient of the Jerwood Drawing Prize, second prize winner, Jerwood Foundation London, UK, 2017 and Prize of the Jury, special mention, Fuso Festival, MAAT Museum, Lisbon, Portugal, 2016.
