No virar do século, duas cassetes são encontradas num antigo estúdio. Nada se sabendo sobre o artista, a sua música é tocada em festas e difundida pela internet. Quase vinte anos mais tarde, José Pinhal, um desconhecido cantor de Matosinhos, torna-se num dos grandes mitos da música popular portuguesa.

At the turn of the century, two tapes were found in an old studio. An unknown artist has his music played at parties and over the internet. Almost twenty years later, José Pinhal, an unknown singer from Matosinhos, becomes one of the greatest myths of Portuguese popular music.

“When you come across José Pinhal, his work and what is being done, you feel an obligation to promote him.” These are the words of Rui Fonseca, the person who spread the energy of José Pinhal in my class in 2015. “Tu és a que eu quero” became the hit of film production trips. When you listen to José Pinhal’s songs for the first time there seems to be a fever for source, and it was in that fever that I went into research about the artist. I ended up finding an article on a blog that would become the beginning of this film. Nelson Gomes, also consumed by the fever of sourcing, asked in 2008: “Who was José Pinhal?” and raised the myth about some tapes found in a studio’s trash. As a director, it seemed like a perfect start for a story. Thus the idea of the documentary was born, which would only come out of the drawer years later, when I happened to speak to Diogo, who became the producer of the project. Over two years we rediscovered the impressive music industry of the 80s, and the tragic story of a man who was always excited, and his way of life that seemed to align with the lyrics of his song “A Vida Dura Muito Muito”. So, four years after everything started, I see this film as a contribution to the whole José Pinhal phenomenon and I hope it will become an important step in the dissemination and reissue of his work. Biografia do Realizador Director Biography
Dinis Leal Machado (b.1996) is a young director from Vila das Aves, Santo Tirso. With a degree in Audiovisual Communication Technology from the Escola Superior de Media Artes e Design, he has recently made several short films, including: Terra Nuclear (2016), My Landscape Does Not Exist (2016), Snooze (2017) and Cringe (2019). Snooze was awarded with The Grand Prize Sophia Student of the Academia Portuguesa de Cinema. He currently attends the MA in Audiovisual Direction and Production at ESMAD-IPP.
