Sinopse Internacional Sinopsis

Three young children, bored and neglected, live off the adventures they create in their own heads, until a day comes when they try to reach the outside. The mother, always busy, seems completely emotionally detached from her surroundings. As the children grow and the mother’s routine is ever more tiresome, the secrets of the mysterious house become apparent.

Mensagem do Realizador Director Statement
When I started to develop this movie I was very interested in the idea of a character that does something unforgivable due to the psychological state they are on, and how that could be portrayed in a film. A film in which the villain would be also the victim, in a way. There had been, in my life, a very absent character, and mostly I knew her through stories that people told. In one of the stories, I learned that she had once ran away from home, and had been chased through the fields and made to come back. From an early age, I have been connected to people strongly affected by mental illness, and a lot of my childhood was marked by the feeling of isolation that comes from this. These two feelings have guided the writing of this story, and in the end it became about three children and their mother, who must learn to cope with an inhospitable environment, which both attacks them and is a reflection of their interior life. I created two parallel worlds within the film, the 2D animated characters and the stop-motion animated world. With this, I wanted to portray a sort of disconnection between the characters and their surroundings. By establishing that the characters are 2D, when the dream is also 2D, it becomes the space inside of the character. When a wave of 2D objects invades the stop-motion set, the interior world of the character is projected onto their surroundings in a visual way. Throughout the film, there’s an alternation between silence and noise, both visually and sound-wise. As the script developed, the movie became almost like two movies. If from the perspective of the children there is intense boredom and stillness, from the perspective of the Mother there is the opposite, mess, unbearable confusion.

Biografia do Realizador Director Biography
Natália Azevedo Andrade was born in Braga, Portugal, in 1992. Natália completed a BA in Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto in 2014, with the film “Within”, which screened at festivals such as Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival and CINANIMA. Recently she completed her Animation MA at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest.
