The Last Bath explores the conflict between confinement and liberation. This is a film about embracing our true individuality despite imposed obligations to comply with society’s beliefs and conventions. A 40-year-old nun revisits her former life when she returns to her childhood village in order to look after her nephew. This brings forth a new set of emotions, brought about by her somber past and repressed desires in confrontation with her spirituality. The nun and her nephew find solace in each other in the midst of a ‘Dantesque’ river-valley, which reflects their isolation. Their loneliness and a twisted family background lead them astray, but these are also the elements that draw them together. The nun carries secrets from a haunted past, whilst the nephew faces life-changing decisions upon the death of his grandfather, who used to care for him. We plunge into the drama in an atemporal space, a timeless universe of abandoned rural areas that still endure in contemporary Portugal. It is in the backdrop of a luminous landscape, with its textures, colors and sounds, that the characters’ darkest inner struggles are fought. The actors are placed at the forefront of the drama, and it is within the walls of the ancestral family home that the conflicts are challenged and lives regained.

David Bonneville * was born in Oporto in 1978 and is a screenwriter and director. His short film CIGANO premiered at Locarno, Guadalajara, and SXSW; it won several best film, screenplay, directing, acting, cinematography, and audience Awards. L’ARC-EN-CIEL premiered at Fantasporto and won the Best Actress Award in Coimbra, at the Mostralíngua Festival. HEIKO was nominated at IndieLisboa, Slamdance and Transylvania Film Festival. It won the award for best short film at the MIX: CPH. David began his career as an assistant to Palme d’Or winner Manoel de Oliveira as well as Turner Prize winner Douglas Gordon. David has also worked at the BBC. He regularly mentors and lectures at the University of Westminster, The Actors Center, and various other national and international structures. THE LAST BATH is his first feature film.
