When I was still just a girl, I was always curious to explore and understand the recurring pleasures of my body. But like almost every girl, for a long time, I didn’t find anyone who could serve as a mirror for me, teaching me about these self-discoveries and feelings of puberty. It was from this desire to register the de-romanticization of virginity and sex as a common necessity for women, with no dissociation between the body and the social, that I decided to write Maria’s story and immerse in the female sexual discoveries. My motivation was to speak in some way about my own desires and to give life to this character who, for me, is so strong as a model, even if so banal and present in our society. Maria’s introspective state stems from how repressed she feels growing up in a society where acceptance and exploration of the body, pleasures, sex, and self-satisfaction through masturbation are taken from women on an institutional level. Men are instructed from an early age to touch each other, a desire that precedes their first contact with women, as a way of relieving the lust of the opposite sex. “Lençol Branco” shows a girl’s first contact with her sex: it is a film about female sexual desires at an age where the search for knowledge of her own body and sexual pleasures and desires is present. – It’s about feeling, touching, having, seeing. It is a feminine encounter with your pleasures and your body.

Rebecca Moreno was born in São Luís do Maranhão, Brazil but was raised in the city of Tremedal in Bahia. She studied cinema in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. And since then, she has worked as a filmmaker and curator of festivals. Her first job as a director, screenwriter, and editor was ‘Lençol Branco’, a final project for the university, completed in 2020. The short was shown at the 24th Tiradentes Film Festival. Still, in 2020, she co-produced and curated the Mini Webfilm Festival with a program that brought together professionals from Brazil and Europe. Other films made by the director are ‘Tempos de Sol, Tempos Só’, shown in the Overdrive project by the Love / Paranoia collective, and at the Mini Webfilm Festival and ‘Intolerável’, shown in the Lumiar 2020 Festival. The director seeks in her imagens to speak through art about personal concerns in defense of women’s protagonism in relation to life and the body as a gesture of confrontation, resistance, and experiment around her and her own self.
