Durante a segunda metade dos anos 80, alguma da música mais venturosa jamais produzida em Portugal foi editada pela Ama Romanta. Este documentário narra a história de resistência cultural de uma editora independente criada pelo músico João Peste, através do seu catálogo e da apresentação de materiais inéditos que testemunham a singular explosão criativa daqueles anos em que esteve activa.

In the second half of the 1980s, a Portuguese independent music publisher was created, Ama Romanta. It was the alternative to the hidden censorship of the big label industry and its founder was João Peste (the charismatic vocalist of Pop Dell’Arte).

The idea of ​​making a documentary about Ama Romanta came from our own desire to watch a film about the publisher that, for amazement of both, it was late to appear, as we consider it one of the most relevant artistic phenomena in the history of contemporary culture in Portugal. This documentary is, therefore, the closest version that we managed to produce the film we wanted to see. And what we wanted to see, in a film about Ama Romanta, was, first of all, live music. Lots of live music – variety of videos that could evoke the unique experience of participating in a concert of Pop Dell’Arte, Mão Morta, Santa Maria, Gasolina em Teu Ventre! or Telectu in the 80s. Finally, we wanted to see a documentary about musical editing. In the first conversations about what could be a documentary about Ama Romanta, we talked a lot, of course, about João Peste as an editor. Interestingly, the closest references that, from our perspective, we found in Portugal came from fields outside music, especially in the area of ​​literary editing – Luiz Pacheco or Vítor Silva Tavares, orchestra editors, as the latter would say, who chose according to the criteria and followed the entire production process of their editions, without interfering in the creative sphere of the authors. Writers and readers who made books, like the musician in love with other music discs featured in the documentary and that will guide viewers through Ama Romanta’s diversified catalog presented there.

Biografia do Realizador Director Biography
Graduated in Film by Lisbon Theatre and Film School. He was the assistant editor of the feature-film DAMNED SUMMER (2017), by Pedro Cabeleira, Special Mention of Cineasti del Presente section in Locarno’s IFF 2017. AMA ROMANTA it’s his first work as a director.
