Sinopse Original Original Sinopsis

Adaptação cinematográfica de “Carta da Corcunda para o Serralheiro” do heterónimo de Fernando Pessoa – Maria José.

Sinopse Internacional Sinopsis

Adaptation of the short story “The letter from the hunchback to the locksmith” by Fernando Pessoa’s heteronym Maria José.

Mensagem do Realizador Director Statement
From the various feminine heteronyms Fernando Pessoa created, my interest was drawn to Maria José, and her letter of an impossible love, so I decided to work on it. I shaped it as a dialogue between Maria José’s loneliness (death) and life (the street), the life she is just a spectator to, sitting at her window. The letter dates from 1930, but the action of the film takes place in 1960, the epoch of the portuguese colonial war. In 1926, the Poet wrote: «For the future I foresee for Portugal, the colonies are expendable». Neighbours’ dialogues consist of excerpts from the letter. I deliberately included some references to football, uttered by passersby, because in the poet’s list of inventions, there is something called table football, several years before Harold Searles Thornton, registered his patent for the game. Besides a fado, the soundtrack is all about street noises: street vendors’ cries, voices, and so on. In 1929, Notícias Ilustrado, published a report about Fado, which Fernando Pessoa winds up like this: «In Fado, gods come back home, legitimate and remote. That’s the meaning of the concept of D. Sebastião.»
