Sob a forma de filme-ensaio pessoal “Semanas de areia, meses de cinzas, anos de pó” introduz Macau, uma antiga colónia portuguesa devolvida à China em 1999. Tendo crescido parcialmente em Macau, a cineasta revisita a história deste território a partir de uma perspectiva histórica portuguesa, abordando formas pós-imperialistas de desafeição política em paralelo com o progresso da demência da sua mãe. Olhar para trás não é contemplação neutra nem factual, mas sim revisão activa de narrativas e recontar de histórias a nós próprias e a outrem. Uma reinterpretação e reavaliação de eventos e relações, considerados sob a luz do contexto correspondente à localização temporal e espacial a partir da qual o olhar acontece. Como praias esvaziadas de areia por extração desenfreada e zonas de novo território, consequência de aterros inúmeros, também a memória é sítio activo de topografias narrativas em transformação constante. Encontramo-nos em Macau de um agora, mas também num Macau do passado. Como se olha para trás? Como se lida com a narrativa geral que isola este território de uma história colonial mais vasta, obscurecendo as ambições imperialistas da altura, e justifica a circunstância da sua existência como a recompensa por um acto isolado? Encontramo-nos num Macau que serve como pano de fundo a memórias pessoais. Memórias partilhadas por uma mãe que perdeu a capacidade de relembrar e partilhar a sua realidade. ‘Semanas de areia, meses de cinza, anos de pó’ é um filme sobre narrativas entrelaçadas, histórico-geográficas, coloniais, pessoais, que convergem numa leitura compósita de umas através das outras. As narrativas não são veículo do filme, mas sim protagonistas, desenvolvendo-se em paralelo, em várias direções, vastas e particulares em simultâneo. O que é, realmente, o acesso à memória? O desarquivar das histórias de coisas invisíveis. Ou das histórias invisíveis de coisas sem visibilidade?

Through the form of a personal yet distant essay film, ‘Weeks of sand, months of ash, years of dust’ introduces Macao, a former Portuguese colony handed over back to China in 1999. Having partly grown up in Macao, the filmmaker revisits the learned history of Macao from a portuguese perspective, addressing post-imperial forms of disavowed political affect alongside the progressing dementia of her own mother. The intertwined historical and personal narratives converge into a compound reading of one through the other. Carefully positioning personal loss next to reflections on colonial narratives, the film ponders questions of looking back into a troubled past from the instability of a presently self-erasing memory. ‘I look at you and I see your gaze devouring the world, but I have no idea what world is being devoured.’

Carefully positioning personal loss next to reflections on colonial narratives, the film ponders questions of looking back into a troubled past from the instability of a presently self-erasing memory. ‘I look at you and I see your gaze devouring the world, but I have no idea what world is being devoured.’ To gaze back is neither factual nor neutral contemplation, but the active revision of narratives and the retelling of stories to ourselves and to others. A reinterpretation and reevaluation of events and relationships, taken into consideration under the light of the spatial and temporal location from which the very gaze occurs. Akin to beaches emptied of sand due to unconstrained extraction and areas of new territory, consequence of numerous landfills, so is memory an active site of narrative topographies in constant transformation. We find ourselves in a Macau of nowadays, but in a Macau of the past as well. How does one gaze back? How does one deal with the mainstream narrative that isolates this territory from a wider colonial history and obscures the imperialist ambitions of the time, while justifying the circumstance of its existence as the reward to an isolated act? We find ourselves in a Macau that is the backdrop to personal memories. Memories shared by a mother who has lost the capacity of remembering and sharing her reality. ‘Weeks of sand, months of ash, years of dust’ is a film about intertwined historico-geographical, colonial, personal narratives that converge in a composite reading of one through the other. The narratives are not the vehicle of the film, but rather the protagonists, developing in parallel, in several directions, vast and particular at the same time. What is, really, the access to memory? The unarchiving of the stories of invisible things. Or of the invisible stories of things without visibility?

Biografia do Realizador Director Biography
Rita Macedo is a Portuguese filmmaker and video artist based in Berlin. Fascinated by the poetic affinity between moving images and fluxes of thought, Rita’s works often operate within the realm of documentary and speculative fiction, with a focus on meaning, memory and history. Her films have been shown at numerous festivals, amongst others at European Media Art Festival, São Paulo International Short Film Festival, Curtas Vila do Conde and Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival. Since 2018 she works as a permanent lecturer for digital film and video at Braunschweig University of Art.
