Sinopse Sinopsis

Arthur, reformado de 80 anos, mora numa pequena casa em Viena. Durante algum tempo cuidou da sua esposa, Martha, gravemente doente, com ajuda de enfermeiras. Quando um novo trabalhador de cuidados húngaro, Fabiu, entra em cena, a sua rotina muda por completo. Ambos se aproximam e dentro de Arthur começam a surgir sentimentos de desejo e anseio reprimido.

80-year-old retiree Arthur lives in a modest home in Vienna. For quite some time he has lovingly been caring for his seriously ill wife Martha, with only female nurses assisting him. When the new male hungarian care worker Fabiu enters the picture, his routine is broken. But soon the two men become closer and inside Arthur feelings of desire and suppressed longing start to rise.

Director’s Note: Life that is coming to an end, life that is just beginning. Age and youth. Longing and hope. Two existences that come together by chance and act fatefully on each other. An encounter that both will never let go and yet will only last for a short time. Arthur and Fabiu. An 80-year-old retiree and a 25-year-old care worker. What is a happy life? What is love? Where to put our desires? Questions that, even in old age, act as silent riddles in people and seem almost unanswerable. Arthur forgot them or suppressed them out of self-protection. But everything that is suppressed pushes upwards and at some point it paves its way into the open. His hidden feelings start moving when he meets Fabiu. These are feelings that give him a vague idea of what he could have had but was denied him by his year of birth and his own worries and fears. Fabiu is gay and so am I. We are lucky to be young in 21st century Europe. Same-sex love is tolerated and even accepted in much of the western world. I can walk hand in hand with a man on the street, kiss him on the park bench, love him openly, marry him. A few decades earlier my life would have been different. I would have had to choose between facing external hostility and being excluded and humiliated in the process or suffer permanent internal torment. People like Arthur have chosen the second path. So how do you deal with feelings that you do not want to allow yourself to exist? – especially those that do not meet the norm. Your natural urge is an outward one. Feelings cannot be suppressed, at least not without consequences. They bore their way through our insides and cause deep pain therein. So the question is, face them or quietly endure the suffering? For Arthur the encounter with Fabiu comes too late. His life took a different direction a long time ago and he has come to a point where there is no turning back. What remains is the acceptance of one’s own decisions and the appreciation of one’s own life. Arthur’s goal is no longer to satisfy his own needs, it is to help a loved one – to take care of his wife Martha.

Biografia do Realizador Director Biography
Stefan Langthaler was born in Vienna in 1987. From 2008 to 2013 he studied Writing and Directing at Filmcollege Vienna. His medium-length graduation film „ALONE“ premiered at New Hampshire Film Festival. His feature-length film debut as director was the documentary „SARGIS – Such is life“, which celebrated it’s premiere 2018 at the Diagonale – Festival of Austrian Film. Recently he worked as artistic assistant for director Michael Kreihsl and received the prestigious “Thomas Pluch Screenplay Award” for his work on “Fabiu”.
