English version

There is a part of a film festival that begins when the lights come back on. It is the moment when we discuss what we have just seen, have the opportunity to ask questions or simply remember the name of a filmmaker whose work we want to explore further. A memorable film has the power to stay with us for a long time; a festival such as Caminhos do Cinema Português makes it possible to share that discovery.

This is the experience that Caminhos renews, year after year, from its home in Coimbra. Now in its 32nd edition, it once again makes room for different generations of filmmakers and very different approaches to storytelling, while remaining true to its founding purpose: inviting audiences to discover the diversity of Portuguese filmmaking.

I particularly value the festival’s commitment to developing audiences. Introducing students to a film produced in an educational setting, or bringing viewers and filmmakers together in conversation, can spark interests that last well beyond the programme. The future of Portuguese cinema, which continues to face so many obstacles, also depends on this curiosity and on the opportunities we create to nurture it.

For those who visit us, taking part in this cultural event is also a way to get to know Central Portugal from within. Between screenings, there are places to explore, local flavours to discover and experiences to share with the people who live here. I believe that those who come to see the best of Portuguese cinema will also take home lasting memories of a region that welcomed them.

It is therefore with great honour and conviction that I join the Honorary Committee of the 32nd edition of Caminhos do Cinema Português. I thank everyone whose determination keeps Caminhos going and wish audiences rewarding discoveries — the kind that make them want to return both to the cinema and to Central Portugal.
